Hello, I’m Owen Beane, I work at Chameleon Tattoo in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Chameleonbodyarts.com is the website. Chameleon Tattoo’s been here more than 10 years, but ten years as such with tattooing, over the last 14 years I’ve been doing body piercing here in Cambridge and I’ll be talking to you about piercings today. The number one piercing and safety tip that I give to everyone is never ever touch a piercing unless you have just washed your hands. Also never on purpose twist or move the jewelry. This is a really, really old misconception. It’s helping to try to move jewelry when you’re trying to heal a piercing and actually the total opposite is the real truth. The less you move the jewelry the faster work your body can make of growing new tissue and healing up. When you’re healing a piercing what you’re trying to do is help your body accept the presence of a foreign object. The more you remind your body that it’s there by moving it the worse off you are and the more you will produce swelling, irritation, redness, fluid and in turn „crusties“, which is what people call the dry fluid on the jewelry. Never ever move the jewelry. It does not help and the idea that jewelry could ever get stuck or that you could heal two pieces of jewelry together is just not true and has never been true.
